 Welcome to A.M.Al-Refai Library


 

Gulf University for Science & Technology's Library was established in 2002 to serve the university's faculty, staff, students and alumni. On June 20, 2006, the library was renamed the  Abdullah Mubarak Al-Refai (A.M.Al-Refai) Library in honor of the late Dr.Abdullah Mubarak Al-Refai, who served as President from 2003-2005.

Vision

The vision of the library, as determined by faculty, staff, students, and alumni is to provide learning resources and information services dedicated to support the University's mission of learning, research, and services. The vision reflects the University's commitment to ensuring high standards of quality and to support innovation in providing information access.


 

Mission

The mission of the A. M. Al-Refai Library is to provide quality, user-focused services and resources in all formats (print/electronic) that respond to and enrich the informational needs and activities (teaching, learning, and research) of faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Goals

The A. M. Al-Refai Library goals are to:

  • Identify, acquire, organize, and preserve informational resources relevant to teaching, research, creative activities, and professional needs of the academic community
  • Provide timely bibliographic access to library resources, including appropriate use of state-of-the-art technology
  • Provide effective instructional support for patrons to locate and retrieve library information and resources
  • Foster a forward-thinking, dynamic library organization that is flexible and responsive to patron needs in achieving the University's mission and goals
  • Encourage and enable patrons to become life-long retrievers, evaluators, and users of information

Collection

The A. M. Al-Refai Library supports a curriculum-oriented collection containing books, e-books, journals, e-journals, audiovisual materials, and bibliographic/full-text databases. The collection has a primary commitment to supporting the University's degree program requirements.

The collection is divided into two categories:

  • Digital Resources
  • Print Resources

Digital Resources

eJournals: The library provides more than 42,200 scholarly journals (including open access titles) in digital format. The collection supports core curriculum degree requirements, general education, and elective courses. The collection provides full text coverage for academic areas of study, including the social science, fine arts, humanities, education, computer science, accounting, finance, business management, and economics. 

eBooks: The library subscribes to over 47,000 ebooks from Springer, ebrary, Safari Online, and NetLibrary. The collection includes eBooks, eReference Works, Lecture notes, and Book series covering various disciplines. 

Databases: The library subscribes to bibliographic and full-text databases including ScienceDirect (Business & Economics collection), ABI/INFORM Global, Encyclopaedia of Islam - Second and Third Editions, Encyclopaedia of The Qur'ān, Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures, Index Islamicus, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Computer Society Digital Library, Business Source Premier, Academic Search Premier, ERIC, Computers & Applied Sciences Complete, SocIndex, Regional Business News, AACE Digital Library, AccessScience, LexisNexis, JSTOR, and Communication and Mass Media Complete.

Print Resources

Books: The library has a growing collection of over 9,500 book titles. Books are classified according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system.

Reserve Collection: The reserve collection includes items designated by faculty for course use as well as core books requiring limited circulation.  Reserve books are accessible at the library circulation desk.

Reference Collection: The reference collection is comprised of encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases, almanacs, handbooks, manuals, and other fundamental sources of information.  The Reference collection is for use only within the library.

Periodicals/Journals: The library presently subscribes to 170 periodical/journal titles in print format.  The collection is arranged alphabetically and is located in the periodical area of the library.

Audio-Visual: The audiovisual collection consists of over 710 videos, audio-cassettes, CDs, and DVDs.  The CD and DVD collection is available only for on-site use.

Special Collection: The special collection comprises Islamic banking & finance, Arabic books, Gulf heritage, theses, and dissertations. As part of the library's special collection, the library provides American Corner and Chinese Corner Collections supported by the United States and Chinese Embassies in Kuwait.

Welcome to the New Library Facilities!!!

The “Fifth GUST Annual Book and Information Fair” was held on Monday, 20 April, 2009, in the Library.

First China-Kuwait Cultural Day was held at Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) in co-operation with The Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy of Kuwait on March 4, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.

As part of the American Corner activities, the A.M.Al-Refai Library, GUST in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States of America in Kuwait hosted Ms. Ilene Evans (Internationally acclaimed African-American actress, Storyteller and Singer) on Thursday, February 12, 2009 to celebrate Black History Month in Kuwait. The theme of the event was “The Role of Africa-American in Global Events of the 21st Century from the Perspectives of a Story Teller”.

Database Adoption ABI/INFORM Global, Encyclopaedia of Islam - Second and Third Editions, Encyclopaedia of The Qur'ān, Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures, and Index Islamicus databases have been added to the existing collection.

Databases Trial
Trial has been setup to access Taylor & Francis eJournals Collection, Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) Virtual Library, ISI Web of Knowledge, SpringerLink Journal Core Collection, Project MUSE, Literature Online Complete (with MLA International Bibliography ), and Plunkett Research Online.


As part of the American Corner activities, the library organized a Digital Video Conference (DVC) with Dr. Clyde Wilcox from Georgetown University, Department of Government on Thursday,  November 13, 2008 to discuss the aftermath of the US elections and foreign policy.

A.M. Al-Refai Library organized the rededication of its American Corner on Oct. 26, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Muhailan-President,GUST, and Her Excellency Deborah K. Jones, the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait attended to reaffirm the MOU between GUST and the government of USA whereby both parties joined in an effort to foster mutual goodwill and understanding between the people of Kuwait and the U.S.

The A.M. Al-Refai Library is pleased to annouce that access to "MyNetResearch" the fast-growing global research network" has been setup.

A. M. Al-Refai Library is pleased to announce the launching of the GUST faculty research database that can be accessed via the Library website.

The Fourth Annual Book Fair was held at A.M. Al-Refai Library on 24th March 2008.

Athens single sign-on access introduced!!
A.M.Al-Refai Library is pleased to announce the introduction of Athens Access, a Single Sign-On Service to access most of the Library resources from remote locations. The Gulf University for Science & Technology is the first University in Kuwait to implement this secure single sign-on access to multiple web-based services.


New Service: A-to-Z eJournals service has been introduced to facilitate easy access to all electronic journals subscribed by the library. GUST is the first university in Kuwait to subscribe to this service.

Information Literacy: The Library provides training and instruction in skills related to locating, evaluating, and using information resources of all types. We offer group, or one-on-one training on topics of the requester's choice. Interested patrons must register at least a day prior to the session at the library.
