The A.M.Al-Refai Library’s Information Literacy Program is to equip students and staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to use the library’s information resources effectively as well as to provide the foundation for effective lifelong learning.

Information Literacy programs are held every semester. These sessions are conducted in the smart-room on the followings days:

Sunday:      9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Thursday:   2:00 p.m. –   3:00 p.m.


 

What is information literacy?

 

Information literacy is defined as the ability to access, evaluate, organize, and use information from a variety of sources effectively.

 

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) identifies six skills an information literate individual is able to do:

  • Determine the extent of information needed

  • Access the needed information effectively and efficiently

  • Evaluate information and its sources critically

  • Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base

  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use
    information ethically and legally

IL Standards

The Association of College and Research Libraries has identified five Information Literacy Competency Standards for
Higher Education. This document was approved by the ACRL Board on January 18, 2000 and names the standard, lists performance indicators and expected outcomes for each standard.

IL Online Tutorials

Texas Information Literacy Tutorial (TILT): TILT is a very comprehensive information literacy web site with online modules that walk you through a range of topics and discuss the issues involved in selecting, searching and evaluating information. The Tiltometer is an online quiz which follows each module and allows you to test your research knowledge and skills.
