Gulf
University for Science and Technology (GUST), in co-operation
with the Cultural Section of the Spanish Embassy of Kuwait, held
its 1st Spanish Cultural Day on Thursday, December 10th
at 11:00 am.

Spanish and
Arabic culture have been intimately connected throughout
history. As a result of the Umayyad Caliphate and its presence
in Spain between the 8th-11th
centuries, Arabic culture left a permanent mark on the
development of Spanish language, architecture, music and other
cultural traditions. Today, Arabic ethnic influence is evident
not only in Andalucía, Spain’s southernmost province, but also
throughout the American hemisphere in Spain’s former colonies.
Similarly,
Spain’s presence in the Americas during the 16-18th
centuries has contributed to the diffusion of Spanish culture,
and, consequently, Spanish is now one of the most widely spoken
languages in the world. Spain’s rich cultural heritage, is a
tapestry of local and regional traditions, festivals and
culinary practices that has had a tremendous impact on the
world.

The Spanish
corner at the GUST Library was inaugurated by the Spanish
Ambassador to Kuwait, His Excellency
Manuel Gomez de Valenzuela, Dr. Shuaib Abdulla Shuaib,
GUST President, Dr. Sabah Al- Quaddoomi, Vice-President for
Academic Services of GUST, Dr. Lee Caldwell, Dean-College of
Business and Administration
and Shobhita Kohli, University Librarian. Spanish books, art
works and photographs were exhibited in the Library.
