Dr. Hussain Al Sharoufi Wins Gold Medal for His Academic Writing Wizard at 6th International Invention Fair in the Middle East

Date:
9 December 2013

GUST Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics, Dr. Hussain Al Sharoufi, has recently won a Gold Medal for his writing application, Academic Writing Wizard (aw-wizard.com), at the Sixth International Invention Fair in the Middle East held in Kuwait. The fair was organized by the Kuwait Science Club and under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Sixth International Invention Fair is one of the largest specialized exhibitions of inventions in the Middle East, and deemed the second most significant exhibition all over the world. Being part of the efforts of the International Exhibition of Geneva, it is also deemed an opportunity for revealing culture of invention to societies and strengthening the existing relationships among the inventors, companies and corporations. There were over 130 international inventors participating in this conference.

Dr. Hussain participated also in an international conference on Communication, 11-14/06/2014, in Brasov - Romania. He won Best Paper Award for the paper he presented on the main idea used in AWW, Lexical Cohesive Trio. The same paper was accepted for publication in Pragmatics and Society, an (A) journal in Linguistics, John Benjamins Publishing Company.

Dr. Hussain’s novel writing tool is a new web-based application that helps teachers and students alike in achieving their academic goals easily and effectively. It helps students plan, organize, write, and edit their academic essays using a new idea in teaching academic writing, Lexical Cohesive Trio. AWW provides teachers with an exceptional environment to assign essays, receive students’ essays, mark them, and provide a comprehensive feedback on every single paragraph.  AWW helps also in generating statistical reports which help in assessing learning outcomes. Teaching academic writing is a laborious and daunting experience, especially for non-native speakers of English. Academic Writing Wizard is the new solution to solving writing problems. The application has the potential of dramatically improving students’ academic writing. By consciously using cohesive elements from detailed categorized lists, students become aware of numerous options that boost their writing and help them start afresh with their academic assignments.
