GUST Celebrate the Commencement of their 12th Graduating Class

Kuwait City, October 18th, 2017: GUST today announced the commencement of its 12th undergraduate cohort, consisting of 650 students, and eighth graduate class, consisting of 85 students for the 2016-2017 academic year.  The ceremony was held at the outdoor amphitheater on campus, under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Education, Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Mohammed Al-Fares, with Dr. Habib Abul, General Secretary of the Private Universities Council (PUC), attending on behalf of the Minister.


The commencement ceremony, was attended by distinguished figures of Kuwaiti society, which included Secretary General of the Private Universities Council, Dr. Habib Taher Abul, Assistant Undersecretary for Information and Research at PUC, Dr. Waleed Al Kanderi, , Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) at GUST, Professor Salem M. Al Tuhaih, Vice-Chairman, Professor Jasem Mohammed AbdulSalam, and BOT members, Professor Nader A. Al Jalal, Dr. Anwar A. Al Fuzai, and GUST President, Professor Donald Bates.


The ceremony began with a speech by Professor Al Tuhaih, followed by the ceremony’s keynote speaker, Dr. Habeeb Abul.  Then followed a third speech, by GUST President, Professor Donald Bates, who then gave way to valedictorians, Noura Al Oseimi, Mubarak Al Enizi, and Alia Attiya who reflected on their times at GUST, and urged their classmates to aspire to be the best they can be in life.


General Secretary of the Private Universities Council, Dr. Habib Abul, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, said, “Learning does not stop when you graduate from university – alas, it is a continuous process that lasts a lifetime.  I also ask you to be loyal to your country, and be appreciative and grateful for what Kuwait has offered you.”



With distinctive, internationally accredited programs, GUST equips its graduates with knowledge and confidence to face any obstacles including a degree that is recognized worldwide.  Recently, the university’s Mass Communication and Media Department was accredited by the American Communications Association, and the university earned its place as the number one private university in the country.  On the sports side, the men’s football team were the champions of the 2017 Belgrade International University Sports Tournament, and the women’s team were this year’s football winners of the University Athletics Association of Kuwait tournament.


Professor Salem Al Tuhaih, GUST Chairman, said, “Investing in human capital and fortifying it with a strong work ethic is the essence of development. By passing on the values which we were raised by, we can align them with the modern tools of teaching to plant the seeds from which we can grow and branch out to new horizons”.



Professor Donald Bates, GUST President also commented, “GUST opened its doors in the fall of 2002 in temporary facilities in Hawally with 398 students – today we have 3,811.  GUST’s first graduating class in 2005 consisted of 22 graduates, today we have 650.  Also, in terms of quality of programs, GUST has been true to the founding Board of Director’s dream.  As of today, GUST has achieved the largest number of international accreditations of any private university in Kuwait and more than most in the Middle East.  However, we are not resting on our laurels, with the support of the recently appointed board of trustees, we are pushing ahead with the vision to further expand and offer more to our students in the future.” 


The night ended with a grand display of fireworks, dinner, and other forms of entertainment to ensure that the joyous occasion is memorable and special for graduates, families, and their friends.
