GUST to Host The Seen Conference

The Mass Communication and Media (MCM) Department at the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) will launch a three day cultural industry conference under the name “THE SEEN” from April 9 to 11 at their Mishref campus. The event will showcase creative talents in the field of visual communication in Kuwait covering areas such as photography, fine art, advertising and illustration. Over 30 leading professionals from creative industries will conduct a series of lectures, activities and workshops which are free and open to the public.

 

The event is spread across three days, each with a corresponding theme. Day 1, Engaging, focuses on individuals and organizations who use visual communication to engage with new communities or the broader society. Speakers that day, in chronological order, include Dalal AlNafisi of Manifesto 13, Lubna Saif Abbas of Yadawi, Jowaher AlBader of Kuwait University, the independent photographers Zainab Abdal and Nasser AlQattan, designer Dr. Fahad Dhawi, Said Zeineddine of Horizon FCB, and Iqbal Haddad of the International Advertising Association’s Kuwait chapter. Day 2, Embracing, highlights the efforts of individuals and organizations who represent and support a core group of visual communicators across Kuwait. Speakers include Yasmine ElCharif from Bazaar Magazine, photographers Mohammed Sultan and Abdulaziz AlSorayia, illustrator Yousef AlBaqshi, Elie Atik and Laila AlGharabally from Impact BBDO, Sami Hanna fro Mullenlowe Blu, artists Thuraya AlBaqsami and Shurouq  Amin, and Tania Shammas from the Contemporary Art Platform. Day 3, Emerging, recognizes new talents, techniques and technologies in the local visual communication field. Speakers include Sara Chouari from Art Space, Barry Rodrigues of Future Communications, illustrator Farah Alsaad, photographers Sager AlSuwaiel and Badriyah AlHajiri, Fasiel AlSaei of KWT Magazine, and illustrator Nouriya AlMass.

 

In addition to the seminars and panels, visitors can also sign up for workshops on a range of subjects from art and illustration, to iphone-ography and calligraphy.  Students and public will also have the opportunity to experience first-hand the various dimensions of visual communications with activity “zones” spread across campus, including equipment

 

THE SEEN conference is the fourth organized by the MCM Department. Each conference is dedicated to an area of emphasis within the department’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mass Communication: Visual Communication, Digital Media Production, and Public Relations and Advertising. Previous events include the first “SEEN” in 2014 as well as “THE SCRIPT” and “THE CAUSE”, which dealt respectfully with the fields of media production and public relations in Kuwait.
