GUST Hosts First-Ever English Language Olympics Kuwait Preliminaries
Preliminaries for the English Language Olympics (ELO) were hosted at GUST, marking Kuwait’s first time as an official organizer of the games. The event was attended by H.E. the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait, Mr. Lawrence Silverman, and GUST Acting President, Dr. Salah Al-Sharhan. The three-day event is part of the international educational competition targeting students between the ages of 11 to 16, from public and private schools all over world. The event was sponsored by AMIDEAST and the United States Embassy in Kuwait. Preliminary winners will move on to compete in the international competition which will host around 150 teams from eight different countries later this year.
The ELO aims at improving students’ English language skills in a fun, creative manner in a friendly competition setting. It also encourages the use of new language learning methodologies, builds teamwork & communication skills, improves the participants’ spontaneous use of the language, and allows educators an opportunity to share experiences and best practices. The main event will have teams competing through a set of activities, projects, assessments, and community service.
GUST has a strong record of supporting events and initiatives that will aid in the development and growth of the community, especially in the field of education. This is exemplified in the university’s participation in similar events, such as the Annual High School Math Competition, organized and hosted at GUST, the Ibtikar Scientific Awards Ceremonies, hosted annually at the university, and the myriad of events held in collaboration with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.
