GUST Shines at 10th IEEE-GCC Conference & Exhibition

Gulf University for Science & Technology was skillfully represented by its senior management, faculty members, staff and students at the Second GCC Students & Young Professionals Congress (SYP Congress) and the 10th IEEE-GCC Conference & Exhibition (IEEE-GCC 2019), held under the theme “Powering the 4th Industrial Revolution”. The conference was organized by IEEE Kuwait in partnership with the GCC divisions last week. 



The IEEE-GCC 2019 included keynotes by renowned experts in the field, presentation of peer-reviewed technical programs, short papers, posters, discussion sessions and industrial presentations on pertinent topics such as smart city technologies, 5G technologies, sustainable energy, robotics & artificial intelligence, as well as electronics and instrumentation.


GUST participated in the conference as a as sponsor, had a presence at the exhibition, and delivered two prizes. This marked the first time that a university sponsors two awards at the IEEE GCC conferences. The prizes were for the eldest participating researcher as a token of appreciation, as well as one to the youngest organizing participant as motivation. The prizes were awarded by GUST Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Mohammad Al Bahar, at the conference Gala Dinner. The dinner was also attended by Dean of the College of Business Administration, Dr. Antonis Simintiras, HR Director, Nawaf Al Khalaf, and GUST faculty members.



Held in parallel to the conference, the Second GCC Students and Young Professionals Congress (SYP Congress) gathered students and young professionals from all around the GCC for a variety of workshops, contests and activities. SYP’s goal is to motivate the youth to drive the economic growth of the GCC with innovative ideas. Moreover, it is focuses on the development of technical and communication skills through various workshops from local organizations. In addition, it enhances and fosters passion for engineering and other capabilities through different technical and collective activities. The event allowed students to share their practical and theoretical ideas and achievements, expanded their horizon, and exposed them to channels that could adopt and invest in their small projects. The congress was also an opportunity for students to network and interact with young researchers, faculty and technology leaders from the region.


The competitions included those based on projects, short paper/posters, robotics, technology and innovation management (TIM) for young entrepreneurs, best YP affinity group, and best student branch.


GUST faculty members that participated in the congress were, Dr. Israa Omran, as Judging Committee Chair and Co-Chair of the Technical Committee, Dr. Nada Al-Masri, as Judging Committee Member, and Dr. Ali Roumani, also as Judging Committee Member.


GUST students Zainab Alarbash, Naila Ghani, and Shirin Abdelqader won the Best Project Award for their project ApproUnity. ApproUnity is a mobile application that aims to aid aspiring students in the process of enrolling into the best suited university for them. The project is a software that takes user information and finds multiple suggestions that are best suited according to their profile. It suggests options according to qualifications and interests of the user, and then provides the requirements for the user to get accepted into the university of their choice. It also includes helpful tips on how to improve qualifications and reapply with better chances. The students were supervised by Dr. Mahomoud Elish.


GUST students Fatimah Alalban, Raghad Alobaid, Merehan Elaraby were awarded the Most Creative Project Idea Award for their project, LeadAway. LeadAway is an interactive map that is easy to use and navigate through. It will plan your route, resulting in a care-free exploring experience that is enjoyed by one or more users. Users will enjoy this application with its eye-pleasing map and its efficient tracking tool. The students were supervised by Dr. Mahomoud Elish.
