Poetry Event Held at GUST
Kuwait City, 27 May 2021: GUST, hosted a virtual poetry competition titled “Poetry in the Time of COVID” on May 19 via Zoom. The event, organized by the English Department gave students the opportunity to share their original poems that related to the COVID pandemic and an opportunity for students to use their English communication skills by composing poetry.
The event was kicked off by special guest Professor of English at Rutgers University and former GUST professor Dr. Mohammed Rafey Habib with an original piece he wrote himself. He was then followed by nine participating students who all shared their own works. The best student received a cash prize of KWD 150 which went to Dina Al-Qinai. The second place winner receiving a cash prize of KWD 100, and the third place winner received a cash prize of KWD 50.
Assistant Professor of English, Dr. Shahd Alshammari, said “This event is crucial for students to get out of their comfort zone and share their work no matter what level of writer they are. It also is a great opportunity for them to share their experience of a stressful situations with others. We thank all the students and committee members for making ‘Poetry in the Time of COVID’ a success.”
“Poetry in the Time of COVID” is the first virtual poetry event held by the English Department at GUST and the fifth poetry event ever to be held. It continues a long standing tradition of offering students a platform to share their creativity with larger audiences while also encouraging them to practice their skills.
