Anonymity in the Age of Disclosure: Musings on Privacy & Publicity

Join Mai Al-Nakib for a discussion of issues related to life in the age of digital disclosure, on Wednesday November 30, at 12:30pm in W1-010.

Does privacy matter in a world where existence or, at the very least, self-worth seems to rely on our online visibility? What value might anonymity retain in the digital realm, where the algorithmic tracking of our every purchase and preference occurs as a matter of course? As so many aspects of our lives shift online—sometimes with our approval and consent, other times without—what effect might this have on normative understandings of “private” and “public”? Further, how does this transformed sense of privacy and publicity change us and our societies?
