GUST Hosts 2nd Finance Alumni & Students Day
Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) organized and hosted its second Finance Alumni and Students Day on its campus. The event focused on the financial industry and gave GUST students and graduates the opportunity to learn from experts and peers. The event welcomed GUST President, Professor Walid Bouhamra, H.E. Ambassador of the United States to Kuwait, Mr. Lawrence Silverman, Kuwait Finance House CEO, Mr. Mazin Al-Nahedh, and Dean of the College of Business Administration, Professor Antonis C Simintiras.
The goals of the event included giving attendees an overview of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) curriculum, providing the opportunity to learn from alumni and financial experts, sharing tips on how to apply to graduate studies abroad, and increasing awareness about recent trends and challenges in the world economy and their impact on the GCC.
Over 15 speakers were invited to share their experience on a variety of finance-related topics such as, Kuwait and the world Economy, CFA and professional certifications, studying abroad, and sharing experiences. The speakers included professors from distinguished universities including: Dr. Osama Al Falah, Howard University (USA), Prof. Bill Russell, Associate Dean at the University of Dundee (Scotland), Prof. Mehmet Asutay, Director of Islamic Economics and Finance at Durham University (UK), and Dr. Salah Alhammadi, Professor at Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education and University of Dundee (Scotland).
The event also welcomed successful industry leaders such as Herbert Klausner, CEO at Siemens EES Kuwait, Dr. Mohamed Trabelsi, Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund, Omar Al-Nakib, Senior Economist at National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) Economic Research Department, Bhaskar Majumdar, Chief Risk Officer at the Industrial Bank of Kuwait, Dalal Behbehani, Assistant General Manager at NBK Domestic Corporate Banking Department, Mohammad Alkulaib, Private Equity Investment Professional at Kuwait Finance House, Issam Al Tawari, Founder and Managing Director of Newbury Economic Consulting,
GUST alumni were also invited to speak and share their experiences on the transition from college student to a working professional, including: Abed AlRahman Azizieh, Financial Analyst at AlShall Economic Consultants, Ali Adel Alhamad, Founder of Gulfcoin Cryptocurrency and Cherriez,Dr. Mohamed Ali, Bangor University (UK) graduate, Lateefah J. AlNouri, Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority Follow-up Department, and Nazeema Derbas, University of Exeter (UK) graduate and Research & Development Officer at Holistic Development & Consulting.
The event was organized by the Economics and Finance Department in in collaboration with the student-run Islamic Finance Club and Student Association. The organizing committee members are: Dr. Khaled Elmawazini, Head of Economics and Finance Department, Dr. Shekar Shetty, Associate Professor of Finance, Dr. Khiyar Abdullah, Assistant Professor of Finance and Dr. Asiye Aydilek, Associate Professor of Economics.
The event witnessed a large turnout of students, staff and faculty, as well as senior management, all of who got the chance to connect with peers and experts in the field. The event is another example of how the university strives to smoothen the transition of its students after their graduation while giving them a well-rounded academic experience.
