Salehah’s Camel

Description

This translation project presents an English translation of Salehah’s Camel by Saud AlSanousi, a literary work set in pre-oil Kuwait that explores themes of love, family obligations, tribal traditions, and personal sacrifice. Through the story of Salehah and her attachment to a cherished camel, the narrative offers a rich portrayal of Bedouin life, social customs, and cultural values. The translation applies Lawrence Venuti’s domestication and foreignization strategies to balance cultural authenticity with readability, preserving key Kuwaiti and Bedouin expressions while making the text accessible to English-speaking readers. The project highlights the challenges of translating dialect, cultural references, kinship terms, and culturally specific concepts, while showcasing the richness of Kuwaiti literary heritage for an international audience.
