Overview

The Insurance Underwriting Process – IF3 program at GUST Executive Education provides participants with a strong foundation in the principles and practices of insurance underwriting. The course explores the role of the underwriter, the decision-making process, and the factors that influence risk assessment and pricing. By the end of the program, learners will understand how underwriting decisions are made, the regulatory framework governing the practice, and the importance of balancing customer needs with the insurer’s risk appetite. This course also prepares candidates for the official IF3 examination accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).

TARGET AUDIENCE

The program is designed for individuals working in or aspiring to work in the insurance industry, particularly in underwriting and related functions. It is ideal for entry-level insurance professionals, junior underwriters, claims handlers, and brokers who want to deepen their understanding of the underwriting process. It is also suitable for business professionals seeking to gain insight into how underwriting impacts the broader insurance market and customer relationships.

PROGRAM CONTENT

The course begins with an introduction to the principles of insurance underwriting, focusing on the purpose, scope, and responsibilities of the underwriting function. Participants then explore risk assessment and evaluation, learning how underwriters assess hazards, analyze proposals, and decide whether to accept, decline, or modify terms.

Attention is then given to pricing and rating methods, including the use of actuarial data, premium setting, and how market conditions affect underwriting decisions. The program also addresses underwriting controls and guidelines, highlighting the importance of compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies.

The course continues with underwriting for different classes of insurance, such as property, motor, liability, and health, providing practical insight into how approaches vary by product line. Finally, participants review the role of technology and data in underwriting, and prepare for the CII IF3 examination, supported by practice questions, exam techniques, and case study discussions.
