About Us
The Functional Materials Group was founded in 2012 by professor Bassam Alameddine and it focuses on designing novel organic and inorganic polymer materials for various applications, namely, gas storage and separation, environmental remediation, supramolecular systems, and optoelectronics.
Research Interests
At Functional Materials Group (FMG) we have several research interests such as Environmental Remediation, Organic synthesis and design and more.
Prof. Bassam Alameddine
Professor Bassam Alameddine is currently The President at Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST). He is the principal investigator of the Functional Materials Group which received multimillion USD from various funding agencies, including the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
Professor Bassam’s research interests are focused on the synthesis of materials for optoelectronic applications, gas separation, and environmental remediation. He has more than 80 published articles in journals and many conference proceedings. Professor Alameddine is an active member of several professional and academic societies; he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and member of the American and Swiss chemical societies besides being an alumnus of the Arab–German Young Academy for Sciences and Humanities.
He had received his Master’s degree in Materials Science Engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute (ENSIACET) in Toulouse, France, before having obtained a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Professor Alameddine was granted a Swiss National Science Foundation postdoctoral excellence award fellowship at Columbia University in New York. He also had several research stays at the University of Fribourg and the Federal Polytechnic Institute of Lausanne in Switzerland.
