Students will develop the ability to proficiently read, write, listen, and speak through the use of various academic topics and tasks. The emphasis is on improving reading and listening comprehension, expanding academic vocabulary, refining grammar knowledge, presentation and interactive skills, learning and improving academic paragraph writing, and implementing critical thinking skills. ENGL 098 builds on the skills established in ENGL 097 for risers or direct placement for new students.

Level Progression and Achievement Criteria
Progression from ENGL 098 to ENGL 100 is determined at the end of each term based on the student’s overall achievement of the course learning outcomes. To successfully complete the course and earn a Pass (P), a student must achieve a minimum overall course average of 70% or higher, calculated from major assessments, including midterm and final examinations, quizzes, classwork, academic presentations, and the EFU in-house post-test. Students who earn below 70% receive a Not Pass (NP) and are required to repeat the level. Final grades are reported as Pass (P) or Not Pass (NP) in accordance with EFU grading policy. Successful completion of ENGL 098 qualifies students to enroll in ENGL 100, a credit-bearing English composition course.
ENGL 098 Achievement Scale and Level Interpretation
Level 2 – ENGL 098 (CEFR B1+ to low B2)
Students at this level strengthen academic literacy and integrated communication skills. Upon successful completion, students are able to:
- Demonstrate comprehension of multi-paragraph academic texts and lectures by identifying and inferring purpose, main ideas, supporting details, and distinctions between fact and opinion.
- Produce coherent, well-developed academic paragraphs with clearly stated main ideas and logically organized supporting details.
- Use intermediate-level academic vocabulary and a range of connectors and complex sentence structures with effective grammatical control.
- Plan and deliver structured academic presentations (4–6 minutes) that include organized introductions, bodies, conclusions, and source-based summaries.
- Engage in interactive academic discussions by responding appropriately, asking follow-up questions, and using language for clarification, agreement, disagreement, and recommendation while maintaining academic integrity.
