Course descriptions

This capstone course offers you the opportunity to apply your academic experience to conduct an experiential learning project in a designated field and apply your education in a practical manner. Students will work in teams on a single project for one partner organization. This experience will help students enhance their skills in oral and written communication, apply the knowledge acquired during the program to solve business problems involving actual data and information systems in a realistic setting, manage team dynamics, and develop a fundamental understanding of all practical aspects of MIS program of study. This course is suitable for senior students only. The course content is updated regularly to take into account the latest software and MIS practices.

MIS Internship

This course is a graduate-level course in Management of Information Systems (MIS). It is offered through GUST’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The course covers several aspects of MIS and is intended for management-level professionals. The course discusses the importance of MIS in today’s competitive business environments highlighting how managers can use MIS to enhance their decision-making process and to better compete with IT in today’s market. The course also discusses the difference between information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) addressing the different avenues of information systems such as database management systems, telecommunications and networking, information systems security, e-business, ethical and legal aspects of information systems, strategic information systems, and the effect of the Internet on information systems (online information systems). The course is also concerned with the information system life cycle including systems analysis, design, and implementation.

This course introduces the different ways of modeling, storing, and managing enterprise data in all its forms (Structured, Semi-Structured, and Unstructured). This includes the basics of relational data modeling and data warehousing. The course also explores ways to enhance data quality and decision-making in the organization by extracting meaningful information from the enterprise data. The course also covers big data technologies (NoSQL DBMS), data visualization, and data quality. Students are exposed to different software and technologies such as SQL, DBMS, MongoDB, and Hadoop.
