Health Outreach Programmes
Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) is dedicated to promoting health, well-being, and community development through a variety of outreach initiatives that extend beyond campus. In alignment with SDG 3.3.2: Health Outreach Programmes, the University organizes and supports activities that raise awareness, provide education, and deliver direct support to improve the quality of life within local communities, among disadvantaged groups, and for immigrant populations.
These programmes, often led by GUST faculty, staff, and student volunteers, focus on key areas such as nutrition, physical health, mental well-being, and exercise. They provide opportunities for students to engage directly with the community, applying their learning in meaningful ways while fostering social responsibility and empathy.
Through these initiatives, GUST continues to build strong connections with local organizations and community groups, empowering individuals to make informed health choices and lead healthier, more active lives. The following examples highlight some of the University’s ongoing efforts to improve well-being and promote inclusive health education across Kuwait.
Student Volunteering Visit to NBK Children’s Hospital
In December 2023, a group of Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) students organized a volunteering trip to NBK Children’s Hospital as part of the University’s ongoing community outreach efforts. Ahead of the visit, students collected toys and gifts across campus to share with hospitalized children, aiming to bring comfort, joy, and encouragement during their recovery. During the visit, the volunteers personally distributed the gifts, spent time with the young patients, and helped create a warm, cheerful atmosphere in the hospital wards.
This initiative reflects GUST’s strong commitment to SDG 3.3.2, which emphasizes improving health and well-being within local communities through active engagement and compassionate outreach. Beyond spreading happiness, the experience instilled in students a deeper sense of empathy, social awareness, and civic responsibility, reminding them of the importance of human connection in promoting emotional and mental well-being. The project also strengthened GUST’s relationship with local health institutions and demonstrated how small acts of kindness can make a lasting positive impact on both the community and the students involved.
Blood donation "Saves Lives" campaign
GUST organized the “Saves Lives” – Blood Donation and Health Awareness Event on December 23rd, 2024, to promote community health, preventive care, and social responsibility. The event began with a welcoming address by the university’s senior management, followed by an inspiring opening speech by the Dean of the College of Arts and Natural Sciences, who honored the guest speakers with trophies in recognition of their efforts to advance public health and well-being.
A key highlight of the day was the guest speaker session and panel discussion, where healthcare professionals shared their personal and professional journeys, addressing challenges, resilience, and the importance of lifestyle changes in reducing chronic disease risks. The session included an interactive Q&A that engaged students in open discussions about physical and mental health awareness, nutrition, and long-term wellness.
In parallel, free medical services were available across campus from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering optical screenings, glucose level testing, and general health consultations. These services aimed to emphasize the importance of early detection and regular checkups in disease prevention.
The Blood Donation Drive, organized in partnership with local hospitals and blood banks, encouraged students, faculty, and staff to contribute to saving lives, with donors receiving appreciation tokens such as campus discount coupons and wellness vouchers.
The event concluded with a networking lunch and discussion on potential research collaborations between GUST and healthcare organizations, exploring opportunities for future joint initiatives in public health education and outreach. Through this comprehensive event, GUST reaffirmed its dedication to cultivating a health-conscious, proactive, and compassionate campus culture that contributes meaningfully to the broader goals of community well-being and sustainable development.
5KM Walking Challenge
In March 2024, the Accounting Club at Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) organized a 5KM Walking Challenge during the holy month of Ramadan to encourage students and staff to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. The event was designed to promote physical well-being, fitness awareness, and community engagement. Participants took on the challenge of completing a 5-kilometer walk before futoor (iftar), highlighting the importance of staying active even during fasting periods.
To further motivate participants, those who completed the challenge were rewarded with prizes and vouchers, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reinforcing positive health habits. Beyond physical activity, the event created a supportive and energetic environment that brought the GUST community together around shared values of health, balance, and well-being.
Through this initiative, the Accounting Club demonstrated how student-led activities can make fitness accessible and enjoyable for everyone, encouraging the university community to integrate healthy practices into their daily lives—both on and off campus.
Mind Matters: Promoting Mental Health Awareness
In celebration of World Mental Health Month, GUST hosted the Mind Matters event in October 2024— an engaging evening dedicated to promoting mental well-being, creativity, and open dialogue on mental health.
The event featured an art exhibition, expert panel discussions, and live stage performances, highlighting the connection between creative expression and emotional health. This event was free entry and open to all. Distinguished guest Dr. Georges Chedid, Director of the Counseling Center at the American University of Kuwait, shared his expertise in neuropsychology and student mental health, emphasizing the importance of community support and awareness. The program also included a musical performance by Dr. Martin Loyato, Associate Professor of Music at GUST, whose art inspired reflection on the role of music in healing and emotional connection.
By bringing together educators, health professionals, artists, and students, the Mind Matters event reflected GUST’s ongoing commitment to fostering open conversations on mental health, supporting well-being on campus, and contributing to the broader goals of SDG 3.
Ramadan Meal Distribution Initiative
In March 2024, the Public Relations Club at Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) organized a meaningful community outreach initiative in collaboration with a local charity organization. The project focused on promoting community health, nutrition, and well-being by distributing freshly prepared meals to families in need, including immigrant and low-income households, during the holy month of Ramadan.
The initiative not only ensured that vulnerable communities had access to nutritious meals during the fasting season but also encouraged students to practice compassion, community engagement, and cultural empathy. Through their active involvement, students gained firsthand experience in organizing charitable activities that directly contribute to improving public health and social welfare.
By engaging in projects that address both nutritional needs and emotional support within the community, GUST students continue to make a positive, lasting impact on Kuwait’s broader health and sustainability goals.
Make a Move Event
In October 2025, GUST organized the Make a Move event, an interactive health and wellness initiative aimed at encouraging students, staff, and community members to adopt more active lifestyles. One of the key components of the event was the WHOOP Challenge, where participants used fitness tracking technology to monitor their daily physical activity, exertion levels, and overall well-being. By engaging in friendly weekly competitions—with prizes awarded to top performers—the challenge motivated individuals to stay active, make healthier choices, and better understand their personal fitness patterns.
This initiative directly supports SDG 3.3.2, as it promotes physical health, exercise, and well-being through outreach activities that extend beyond traditional classroom learning. By creating an open, community-focused event that encouraged participation from diverse groups, GUST reinforced its commitment to improving health awareness and fostering a supportive environment that prioritizes long-term wellness.
GUST STEPS Challenge
GUST promotes campus and community well-being through interactive health-focused events such as the STEPS Challenge, held on October 29 2025 at the GUST. The event encouraged students, faculty, and staff to participate in a variety of sports and physical activities, creating an energetic and engaging environment that highlighted the importance of daily movement, exercise, and healthy lifestyle habits. Participants competed in multiple fitness challenges, with prizes awarded to winners to further motivate involvement. By bringing together individuals from across the university and promoting physical activity in an enjoyable and inclusive setting, the STEPS Challenge supported the goals of SDG 3.3.2 by improving awareness of health and well-being and fostering a culture of active living within the GUST community.
“Impact of Modern Lifestyle on Spine Health” – Wellness Outreach Seminar
On 26 November 2025, GUST hosted a seminar titled “Impact of Modern Lifestyle on Spine Health,” delivered by physical therapist and osteopath Yousef Fareed Alsaleh, a specialist in sports medicine and rehabilitation. The session educated students and staff on posture, daily movement habits, injury prevention, and long-term spinal wellness—topics increasingly relevant in today’s sedentary, tech-driven lifestyle. By providing expert-led guidance that promotes healthier routines and preventive care, this seminar directly supports SDG 3.3.2: Health Outreach Programmes, which emphasizes community education and initiatives that improve overall health and well-being. Through events like this, GUST continues to encourage a culture of awareness, self-care, and proactive health management across its campus community.
