I am entering my fourth year as President of Gulf University for Science & Technology (GUST) and I have the same sense of excitement and enthusiasm as the day I joined GUST. My pride in being associated with an outstanding university is as a result of getting to know firsthand experience, our GUST family atmosphere and our GUST premier quality image that is found throughout our campus.
To illustrate this emphasis on premier quality education that is world class, one needs only look at the international accolades GUST has earned in the past three years. First GUST received Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) accreditation for our Computer Science degree. The degree accreditation is one of only 26 outside the United States and it is the only Computer Science program in Kuwait to achieve the International Seal of Quality. Our College of Business earned the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business-International (AACSB) for all of its undergraduate programs and our MBA from the oldest and largest professional business accrediting agency in the world. This award places GUST’s business program among the top five percent of business programs worldwide.
The most recent accolade of quality was officially announced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings in which GUST was in the top 100 Arab Region Universities—there are 971 universities and colleges in the Arab Region. This is a great accomplishment as GUST is the first ever private university from Kuwait to make the list. I am excited to see that the dedication and distinguished caliber of our faculty, talented students and hardworking staff and our supporting administration is being recognized. For GUST, on its first attempt, to rank 73rd on the 2016 Arab Region List is a great achievement. All of these acknowledgements of quality are in addition to the Commission on English Language Accreditation (CFA) for the English program that we already possess.
Of course we are not resting on our past achievements, plans for additional international professional accreditations for Math, Mass Communications and Public Relations are progressing.
None of this would have been possible without the visionary guidance of our Board of Trustees (BOT) who established the quality expectations for GUST at its founding some 15 years ago. The BOT has been willing to back up the vision of world class education in Kuwait with support and the resources to achieve these goals in record time. To the Founding Board and the Current Board of Trustees at GUST: all associated with GUST are eternally grateful.
Of course none of these accolades would be possible without a dedicated quality faculty. Graduates will not remember the President, Vice President or Dean but they will remember the dedicated and caring faculty that supported them along their learning journey. GUST has been diligent in selecting over 170 highly qualified faculty from over 35 countries with academic preparation from outstanding universities from around the world. GUST selects faculty that love to teach and interact with students as their number one objective. Many of our outstanding faculty have applied their expertise to solve societal, economic, and business issues.
The faculty are supported by an energetic and creative staff that are dedicated to fulfilling their GUST mission of providing a “Student First” and “GUST Family” atmosphere. They are here to assist in solving student issues in order to make a comfortable and fun learning environment.
Like all thriving organizations, GUST is constantly growing and pushing the envelope of change. The GUST Board of Trustees has approved a KD22 million building plan that includes a new classroom building, a new laboratory building and a new multilevel parking garage. We are pushing to expand our table of degrees with programs in engineering, medical administration and general studies degrees at the undergraduate level and programs in Accounting, Economics, Computer Science, MIS Communications, Education and English at the graduate level.
As the President of GUST I welcome you to our GUST family! As we embark on your exciting learning experience to prepare you to become the leaders of Kuwait and the Arab region in a dynamic and exciting future. I am confident that together we will make tremendous contributions to our alumni, Kuwait and the region. I wish you all the very best on your exciting educational journey. Welcome to GUST!
